According to the latest figures from the CBI, UK businesses are losing over £12 billion per annum due to employee absence. For the most part, this absence and the resultant loss of productivity are caused by the short and long term sick. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development ("CIPD") currently places this at an average cost of £659 per employee per year.

Although this is a national problem, the vast cost implications of employee sickness / absence can be illustrated far more specifically to individual UK companies.

The national average of days lost per year is 6.5 days, but this can be much greater in some industries such as transport, retail and utilities. Furthermore, in the public sector this average rises to 10.3 days per annum. Following these averages, the chart shows the annual cost of absence for companies of varying size:
