What is health surveillance and why is it important?
Health surveillance is a system of ongoing health checks. It is used to monitor the impact of exposure to specific workplace hazards on a person’s health over time, including:
- High levels of noise
- Vibrating tools or machinery
- Dust, fumes, solvents or other hazardous substances
- Ionising radiation
These exposures are known to increase people’s risk of developing occupational diseases, such as hearing loss, hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), respiratory conditions and other long-term health issues. As an employer, you therefore have a duty of care and legal obligation to manage these risks. Failing to do so could lead to serious health implications for your employees and costly consequences for your business.
Together with fit to work medicals, health surveillance helps you prevent illness and injury, stay compliant with legal and regulatory requirements, and follow industry best practice.
These assessments and health checks allow you to:
- Ensure employees in safety critical roles are fit to perform their duties safely, without risk to their own or others’ health and wellbeing.
- Detect early signs of occupationally induced illness so you can take action to prevent problems getting worse.
- Determine how well your control measures are working and whether changes or further interventions are needed.
- Identify opportunities to provide employees with additional education and training on the correct use of protective equipment, safe working practices and the importance of early reporting of health concerns.
- Avoid costly legal consequences and civil liability claims.
