Understanding dyslexia in the workplace: Challenges, strengths, and support

28/01/26 – Blog, Community, Mental Health, Occupational Health, Wellbeing, Workplace Health & Safety

Dyslexia is incredibly common-affecting around 10% of the population, with approximately 4% experiencing it severely.

Importantly, it doesn’t impact intelligence-in fact, many people with dyslexia are highly creative and strong visual thinkers.

Given how common dyslexia is, it’s essential for employers to understand how to support employees so they can truly thrive.

Understanding the impact of dyslexia at work

Dyslexia primarily influences reading, writing, and spelling skills-but it also affects memory, sequencing, organisation, and processing of instructions. It falls under the “neurodiversity” umbrella, alongside conditions like ADHD, dyspraxia, and autism spectrum condition. Many individuals have more than one of these differences.

Here are some effective ways to support dyslexic employees at work:

Reading & writing:

  • Provide verbal instructions alongside written ones
  • Offer assistive tools like speech‑to‑text software, reading pens, or spell checkers
  • Use coloured overlays, screen settings, charts, and visuals

Information processing:

  • Break tasks into individual steps
  • Repeat and confirm understanding of key points
  • Provide templates, examples, or demonstrations

Time management & organisation:

  • Offer access to quiet spaces and minimise multi-tasking
  • Use tools like calendars, checklists, alarms, colour coding, and calendars
  • Set realistic interim deadlines and offer extra time for written tasks

Environment & accessibility:

  • Ensure documents are dyslexia‑friendly (clear fonts, formatting)
  • Allow flexible working arrangements, remote work, and quiet areas
  • Use a Workplace Needs Assessment to get tailored advice for assistive tech

Implementing adjustments successfully

  • Speak to the employee first—they know what works best for them
  • Check if they’re eligible for Access to Work funding
  • Take specialist advice-e.g., occupational health, BDA assessors-to guide your choices
  • Review adjustments regularly to ensure continued effectiveness

Why it matters

Improving support for neurodiverse colleagues is more than compliance-it’s about unlocking potential. Many dyslexic employees are highly creative and bring fresh perspectives, helping teams innovate and thrive. According to recent reports, organisations with strong neuroinclusion strategies can see productivity boosts of up to 30%.
