How to tackle workplace attendance as an SME
Poor workplace attendance can quickly wreak havoc on small and medium-sized enterprises. One person off sick can mean missed deadlines, added pressure on colleagues, and managers spending time firefighting instead of growing the business.
In the UK, employees take an average of 5–6 sick days per year, and the Keep Britain Working report estimated that poor workplace health can cost UK employers around £85 billion annually. For smaller teams, those lost days and the associated costs add up fast – making a proactive, health-focused approach to attendance essential. So, what does that look like in practice for SMEs?

Start with a clear sickness absence policy
A robust sickness absence policy is your first line of defence. It sets expectations, supports consistency and helps managers act with confidence. Your policy should clearly explain how employees report sickness, how absence is recorded and when return-to work conversations need to happen.
Crucially, an effective sickness absence policy isn’t just about process – it’s about prevention. Clear guidance and early conversations encourage employees to speak up sooner, reducing the risk of issues escalating into long-term sickness and prolonged time away from work.
Use absence tools to stay in control
Relying on spreadsheets or informal tracking makes it harder to see the bigger picture. Absence tools give businesses visibility over trends, helping you spot repeat absences or emerging health issues early.
These tools are particularly valuable for identifying when short-term absence may be turning into long-term sickness, enabling timely intervention. For growing businesses, this type of small business support reduces admin, and supports better consistency and fair decision-making.

Monitor absence and act early
Monitoring absence isn’t about policing –it’s about looking after employee wellbeing. Regular check-ins and return-to-work meetings help managers understand what’s going on and offer practical support, whether that’s making temporary adjustments or arranging access to specialist advice.
Occupational health assessments are also a key part of this approach. They provide expert insight into an employee’s capacity to work, identify adjustments that can prevent absence, and help tackle both physical and mental health issues before they worsen.
