Menopause in the workplace – Why awareness is so important
Menopause symptoms can have a huge impact on an individual’s daily life, including their relationships, family life, social life and work. They can adversely affect employee wellbeing and organisational productivity if not managed effectively.
Research has found that:
- 73% of women feel unsupported at work while experiencing menopause
- 76% of women going through the menopause find symptoms moderately or extremely problematic at work
- 1 in 10 leave work because of menopause symptoms
The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) recently issued guidance that employers must make “reasonable adjustments” to support women during this significant life transition. Failing to make “reasonable adjustments” amounts to disability discrimination under the Equality Act 2010 if the symptoms have a “long-term and substantial impact” on a woman’s ability to carry out their usual day-to-day activities.
