What is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)?

As the days get shorter and the nights draw in, many people notice a dip in their mood. For some, this goes beyond the ‘winter blues’ and develops into Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) – a type of depression that follows a seasonal pattern, most commonly occurring in autumn and winter.

Research suggests that around 1 in 20 people in the UK are diagnosed with SAD and more than a third of the population report feeling low during the darker months.

Fortunately, there are many ways you can help support your employees’ wellbeing and keep your teams motivated and productive over the next few months – and we’re here to share them!

But first, what exactly does SAD look like?

SAD can affect people in different ways, but common symptoms include:

  • Persistent low mood and feelings of sadness
  • Irritability and heightened stress
  • Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed
  • Fatigue and low energy, even after rest
  • Difficulty concentrating, leading to reduced productivity

When these symptoms go unnoticed, they can have a significant impact on staff wellbeing and overall workplace morale.

What impact can SAD have on businesses?

If left unmanaged, SAD can lead to:

  • Poor mental health, which can contribute to increased absenteeism and presenteeism
  • Low morale, which may affect team dynamics
  • Reduced productivity, impacting business performance
  • A negative workplace culture, as stress and disengagement spread

For employers, this isn’t just a health issue – it’s a business priority. Supporting staff wellbeing is essential for maintaining a positive, productive environment.

What can you do to help?

Here are a few simple ways you can help boost employee wellbeing over the next few months:

  • Promote work-life balance: Encourage regular breaks and flexible working where possible. Even a short walk outside during daylight hours can make a big difference.

  • Create a comfortable workspace: Small changes can have a big impact. Improve lighting, add greenery, or refresh break areas to create a more uplifting environment.

  • Offer a comprehensive EAP: An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) gives your team access to confidential counselling and mental health resources when they need them most. Make sure employees know how to access it.
  • Provide access to counselling: Whether through your EAP or other services, ensure employees can speak to qualified professionals when they’re struggling. Early intervention can make all the difference.

  • Encourage regular catch-ups: Create space for informal conversations between colleagues that aren’t about work. A quick chat over coffee or a virtual check-in can help people feel more connected and supported.
